Airbnbs fall into two camps for me— they can either be a perfunctory, more affordable hotel alternative— or they can be a unique travel experience in their own right. Though both are valuable, it's the latter category that excites me the most and no other city nails secret little spaces better than Tokyo. Whether you gravitate towards a more traditional home with wood and warm tones, a colorful and contemporary livable art piece, or more modern and minimalist interiors, Tokyo has the range.

I've compiled a list of my favorite spaces across the city that can be found on Airbnb, from cozy budget-conscious options for solo travelers to spacious abodes for large groups. All of the Airbnbs listed below also comply with the recently passed "minpaku" law in Japan, meaning that they are all legally licensed to operate as such.

For Solo Travelers

We're looking for... an affordable place since costs won't be split with anyone, in an exceedingly safe location, and the potential for human interaction.

"Private Room Just Me Only" in Shinjuku   Starting at $45/Night

Photos via Airbnb

Imagine how lovely it would be to wake up to this sun-drenched nook in the morning. It even comes with it's own private balcony! If you want to save a little more, Min & Haru's hostel also has shared dormitory-style rooms starting at $36/night.

This Airbnb is accessible via elevator but we recommending contact the host directly for more information on wheelchair accessibility throughout the hostel.

"Shimokita Hostel" in Shimo-Kitazawa   Starting at $79/Night

Photos via Airbnb

A colorful, quirky hostel in one of Tokyo's coolest up-and-coming neighborhoods. I love the "superior" room shown here because of the private balcony and copious amounts of natural light, but if you want to cut down on costs Shimokita Hostel also has capsule-style beds available.

This Airbnb is accessible via elevator but we recommending contact the host directly for more information on wheelchair accessibility throughout the hostel.

"The NINJA House" in Shinjuku   Starting at $80/Night

Photos via Airbnb

An adorable, almost hidden little house, tucked away near Shinjuku. This tiny space packs all the essentials, though the lofted bed may make it inaccessible for some.

Guests will need to climb a ladder to access the lofted bed.

"Chambord Harajuku" in Shibuya   Starting at $80/Night

Photos via Airbnb

This studio apartment is only available for long term stays of at least a month, but it manages to pack a tasteful amount of color and personality. I also love the creative use of curtains to divide up the tiny space.

This Airbnb is accessible via elevator but we recommending contact the host directly for more information on accessibility throughout the space.

For Couples & Close Friends

We're looking for... a reasonable price when split between two people, with a little more space to stretch out and an air of romance.

"IKEBUKURO Japanese 'Mingei' room" in Toshima   Starting at $90/Night

Photos via Airbnb

This traditional but tasteful Airbnb exudes a sense of cozyiness and calm. The house plants and pink bathroom are also an nice touch of color!

This Airbnb is located on the second floor of an elevator-serviced building. However, the tatami style bedding may not be ideal for people with impaired mobility.

"Designer's Flat" in Shibuya   Starting at $127/Night

I can't say no to a poured concrete apartment. This one is minimally furnished, with an intriguing narrow layout and lots of sunlight!

This Airbnb is accessible via elevator but we recommending contact the host directly for more information on accessibility throughout the space.

"Caravan Hotel Tokyo" in Minato   Starting at $133/Night

Photos via Airbnb

How adorable is this retro trailer? It's situated in a hip food court in the heart of Omotesando, which means you can get the glamping experience but with the convenience of being close to everything.

Please contact the host directly for more accessibility information.

"Kawaii Caltural Room!!" in Shibuya   Starting at $251/Night

Photos via Airbnb

This. apartment. is. everything! The unabashed use of pale pink and neon lights is so fitting for this charming spot's location in Harajuku and the "cherry blossom" ceiling light / canopy is... next level. Though the listing says it can accommodate up to 5, given that 3 people would have to sleep on air mattresses I think it's most comfortable for 2.

Please contact the host directly for more accessibility information.

For Small Groups

We're looking for... a reasonable price when split between three to five people, with privacy for couples, and common spaces for socializing.

"Roppongi Shed House" in Minato   Starting at $161/Night

Photos via Airbnb

Dried flowers create an interesting point in this serene yet clean Airbnb that celebrates natural elements. Though it can accommodate up to six, it's mostly ideal for three.

This Airbnb is accessible via elevator but we recommending contact the host directly for more information on accessibility throughout the space.

"Reversible Destiny Lofts" in Mikata   Starting at $205/Night

Photos via Airbnb

Remember that season of Girls where Sosh goes to Tokyo and lives in an insane-completely-unrealistic apartment? Well, it's more realistic than you'd think because it turns out you can actually stay in these colorful, block-shaped lofts. They're considered an interactive piece of art by artists Shusaku Arakawa and Madeline Gins, and created in tribute to Helen Keller. Though the Destiny lofts are located less centrally than the other options here, they are very conveniently located if the Ghibli Museum is on your itinerary.

This Airbnb is accessible via elevator but we recommending contact the host directly for more information on accessibility throughout the space.

"BnA Athletic Park" in Chiyoda   Starting at $205/Night

Photos via Airbnb

BnA Studios is a group that fuses art and hospitality, by allowing local artists to design and create unique spaces to stay in. The rooms above, designed by artist Studio Bowl, are my favorite of their offerings and perfect for a group of four traveling together!

This Airbnb is accessible via elevator but we recommending contact the host directly for more information on accessibility throughout the space.

"Elegant spacious modern JP-style" in Minato   Starting at $216/Night

Photos via Airbnb

I love the light and air-y feeling of this Airbnb, which looks also happens to look like the perfect backdrop for any MUJI products. The dark, stone bathtub is also a nice contrast.

This unit is located on the fourth floor in a building with no elevator.

"Spacious Shibuya House w/ Garden" in Minato   Starting at $242/Night

Photos via Airbnb

This home is shared with the host family, but in this case that's actually a plus. Not only are they The Nicest according to reviews, but they'll cook you free breakfast. You can also hang with their cats if you're not allergic like me. The house has some amazing views of the surrounding greenery and is very centrally located in Shibuya.

This unit is located on the ground floor of the house, but we recommend contacting the host directly for more accessibility information.

For Large Groups

We're looking for... enough beds for six or more people, spacious common areas for gathering, and a communal vibe.

"SMI:RE STAY Harajuku" in Shibuya   Starting at $198/Night

Photos via Airbnb

This home blends traditional and modern aesthetics and can comfortable accommodate 8 (beds for everyone! yay). It's also centrally located in Harajuku.

This a single-level home with no stairs.

"悠々亭( YUYUTEI ) 東京浅草" in Taito   Starting at $377/Night

Photos via Airbnb

This Airbnb looks minimal on the outside but is filled with whimsical charm on the inside, thanks to all the cozy wooden furnishings. Though it can accommodate up to 8, it's probably most comfortable for 6.

Please contact the host directly for more accessibility information.

"Designer Retro Modern Japanese House" in Shibuya   Starting at $449/Night

Photos via Airbnb

This wooden abode has high ceilings and kind of gives me a 90s vibe, but in a good way. It seems like such a cozy place for a group traveling together, and it's located near Nakameguro and Daikanyama— some of my favorite neighborhoods in Tokyo.

From the host: "This Airbnb is a two-story house, with bedrooms available on both levels."

"Stunning Home in Central Tokyo" in Minato   Starting at $898/Night

Photos via Airbnb

This stunning modern home is a bit expensive, but it is also extremely spacious and luxurious— check out the bath tub for instance. It was designed by Japanese architecture studio Baqueratta, who basically excel at this modern minimalist style. The house is located in tranquil Minato and can comfortably accommodate 6, or up to 8 with air mattresses.

From the host: "The flat is on the fourth floor of an ancient property with no elevator. Anyone with mobility issues may find the stairs a challenge."
