It’s been awhile since I’ve done an Airbnb round-up and this week I’ve decided to focus on Stockholm because of this lovely little place that I stayed at the last time I visited the city— one of the places that inspired me to start The Innbox in the first place:

Unfortunately when I went to find it on Airbnb it was, poof, gone. Such is the nature of entering markets without going through the proper legislative channels, I guess. Actually I have no idea if that’s why my dreamy Stockholm Airbnb is now gone but it is the reason many places I’ve stayed the world over are no longer available on the website.

But that’s okay, because in my search I found so many more beautiful spaces. I’ve stayed at enough IKEA-furnished hotels all around the world to know that it takes more than a POÄNG chair and a RENS sheepskin rug to capture authentic Swedish charm. It’d be easy to leave a space sparsely decorated and say it’s evocative of Scandinavian design but in that case maybe it's not design that I want. I want the lived-in feel of a rustic country home and the romance of a shabby-chic city apartment. So here in this list you’ll find cozy vintage fireplaces, densely packed bookshelves, lush fabrics and floral prints; the little details that imbue a space with a sense of kindred and warmth.

Below are my top choices for places to stay in Stockholm. For the purpose of this list I haven't included places located in the archipelago, only the city center.

For Solo Travelers

We're looking for... an affordable place since costs won't be split with anyone, in an exceedingly safe location, and the potential for human interaction.

"Private Room in Central Flat" in Östermalm   Starting at $61/Night

Photos via Airbnb

Why we like it: In addition to being one of the most affordable places on this list, this Airbnb is located in the posh neighborhood of Östermalm, near many museums and cultural sites. It's perfect for nature lovers not just because of the leafy interiors but it's proximity to Tessinparken— and if humans aren't your jam, there's a really sweet dog that lives here as well.

There is an elevator in the Airbnb's building but we recommend directly contacting the host for more accessibility information on the unit itself.

"Stockholm's Finaste Kvarter" in Östermalm   Starting at $88/Night

Photos via Airbnb

Why we like it: the space is a private room in a tastefully decorated yet cozy and lived-in apartment, with an enviable art collection. Reviewers have noted that the location is safe for femmes, and everyone raves about the host's homecooked breakfast which is included with your stay.

Please inquire directly with the host for more accessibility information.

"Cozy One Room Apartment" in Östermalm   Starting at $94/Night

Photos via Airbnb

Why we like it: it's a private apartment with its own entrance that's the perfect size for one person. The lofted bed makes way for a spacious living area below. The Airbnb also has an lockbox for self check-in.

Guests will need to climb a ladder to access the lofted bed.

"1920s Architect Studio" in Södermalm   Starting at $100/Night

Photos via Airbnb

Why we like it: incredible views from the studio window, a cute renovated kitchen, and space that's set up for those looking to get a little bit of work done while in Stockholm. While the space can accommodate up to two people, based on reviews and the size we think it's most comfortable for one.

Guests will need to climb steps to access the lofted bed.

For Couples & Close Friends

We're looking for... a reasonable price when split between two people, with a little more space to stretch out and an air of romance.

"Historic Time Travel Apartment" in Gamla Stan   Starting at $61/Night

Photos via Airbnb

Why we like it: the mint green vintage furniture, blue and white tiled bathroom, and all the interesting little antiques littered throughout the space. Also, come on, the price. Though it can accomodate up to four people, we think it's most comfortable for a couple— and still incredibly affordable for two.

Please contact the host directly for more accessibility information.

"Old House and Garden" in Södermalm   Starting at $72/Night

Photos via Airbnb

Why we like it: the lush, countryside vibe despite being located near one of Stockholm's hippest areas. The historic touches and charming wooden furniture also add a lot of warmth and coziness to this Airbnb, which is a private room in a 250 year old building.

Please contact the host directly for more accessibility information.

"Perfect Little Place" in Södermalm   Starting at $133/Night

Photos via Airbnb

Why we like it: the clean, white, and modern interior design. We also like all the tall windows surrounding the bed and the way the tiny bathroom utilizes its space. Reviewers note that the Airbnb is perfectly situated in the heart of Södermalm, one of Stockholm's hippest areas.

Please contact the host directly for more accessibility information.

"Bliss One Bedroom Apartment" in Gamla Stan   Starting at $166/Night

Photos via Airbnb

Why we like it: the romantic location in the center of Stockholm's old town. The modern, beautiful kitchen and tastefully decorated apartment with pastel accents. Though the space doesn't yet have many reviews on Airbnb, the company that operates the space, Residence Perseus, has stellar ratings on TripAdvisor.

From Residence Perseus: "We would love to be able to welcome any guest to our beautiful 17th century building. Unfortunately, though, the old construction allows very limited accessibility and our apartments are not suitable for wheelchairs due to thresholds, ledges and narrow door frames."

For Small Groups

We're looking for... a reasonable price when split between three to four people, with privacy for couples, and common spaces for socializing.

"2 Rooms in Stockholm Apartment" in Norrmalm   Starting at $100/Night

Photos via Airbnb

Why we like it: the space is perfectly suited for a group of three (which so few things are). We also love the bright, cheery colors, courtyard, and proximity to the train station. The host is also a licensed tour guide and translator.

Please contact the host directly for more accessibility information.

"1 Bedroom Penthouse" in Gamla Stan   Starting at $116/Night

Photos via Airbnb

Why we like it: what's not to like about this lush, moody apartment? It's spacious enough for three people AND it has a dining room, a modern kitchen, antique fireplace, mirrors galore, and not one but two adorable outdoor spaces. It's taking me a lot of self control to not book a flight to Stockholm right this minute.

Outdoor spaces require stairs to access but we recommend reaching out to the hosts for more specific accessibility details on the apartment itself.

"Unique Old Town Apartment" in Gamla Stan   Starting at $166/Night

Photos via Airbnb

Why we like it: the space manages to be both luxe yet historic and cozy thanks to velvet-y textures, bold animal prints juxtaposed with the rustic fireplace and cavernous bedroom. I'm imagining the most fabulous rich old lady living here.

From the host: "The stairs down to the bedroom are quite steep and not recommended if you have trouble walking or balance or have small children."

"2 Bedroom Turn of the Century Apartment" in Östermalm   Starting at $189/Night

Photos via Airbnb

Why we like it: this mostly white apartment still manages to look cozy and warm. Also? We would die for that green fireplace. While the apartment can accomodate up to five we think it's most comfortable for four and the set-up is perfect for a family traveling with kids. The hosts can even provide a crib if needed.

This unit does have elevator access.

For Large Groups

We're looking for... enough beds for five or more people, spacious common areas for gathering, and a communal vibe.

"500 Year Old House" in Gamla Stan   Starting at $96/Night

Photos via Airbnb

Why we like it: guests rave about the location, which is super central in Stockholm's old town. The unit is even right next to the Royal Palace! Location outside, the price is kind of ridiculous considering you can fit up to 16 people in here for less than $100 a night (though we would recommend no more than 10 to keep everyone comfortable). They even have a kitchen and dining room table that can accommodate a big group.

The unit occupies the top two floors of a historic building, accessible by stairs.

"Giant 4 Bedroom Penthouse" in Gamla Stan   Starting at $111/Night

Photos via Airbnb

Why we like it: the exposed beams, plentiful windows, and sloped attic ceilings on the top floors. The space can accommodate up to 9 (8 comfortably) and also features a balcony overlooking Järntorget Square. In addition the hosts can also provide tailored services like yoga classes, mindfulness, and personal training at your request.

Please contact the host directly for more accessibility information.

"Baltzar Old Town Rooftop Apartment" in Gamla Stan   Starting at $159/Night

Photos via Airbnb

Why we like it: the brilliant pops of blue, especially in the kitchen tiles, as well as the vintage floral fabrics. Families in particular seem best suited for the apartment's layout, but everyone will appreciate it's central location. Though it's a fourth floor walk-up, most guests say it's worth the climb.

From the host: "The flat is on the fourth floor of an ancient property with no elevator. Anyone with mobility issues may find the stairs a challenge."

"Carl Old Town Apartment with Terrace" in Gamla Stan   Starting at $199/Night

Photos via Airbnb

Why we like it: the spiral staircase, brilliant rooftop terrace, sloped ceilings, modern bathroom, vintage fireplaces, and all the little nooks and crannies in this historic building. Can I move in tomorrow?

From the host: "The flat is on the fourth floor of an ancient property with no elevator. Anyone with mobility issues may find the stairs a challenge."
